Abstract

Immigration of Haitian nationals to Goiás has raised the need to understand social, educational, and cultural contexts. The research used questionnaires and interviews based on Bourdieu’sconcept of attributed meaning (1983) and Sayad’s concept of migration (1998). Our resultsidentified education as: a means of overcoming and emancipation; promoter of opportunities;tool for collective construction and coexistence; instrument for national development; anddomain where school is subordinated to family and religion. It is concluded that meanings areindividual when they concern the improvement of one’s own and family’s conditions, andcollective when they concern social coexistence, both locally and globally.
