Abstract

In contemporary society the diversity of cultures is an evident fact. However, the verification of existing multiculturalism does not mean valuing and recognizing cultural diversity. In the educational field, stating that there is socio-cultural diversity does not mean stating that there is space, study and opportunity for all subjects, including members of non-hegemonic cultures, to manifest themselves, be recognized, respected and valued. Thus, this article seeks to point out challenges and possibilities of implementing a multicultural education based on the intercultural perspective of Vera Maria Candau (2002;2008;2014) which, in addition to recognition, respect and cultural affirmation, presupposes an inter-relationship between cultures, crossing pedagogical and curricular theories and practices, with a view to building a more democratic and inclusive society, education and school.
