Cordel's Literature is a literary cultural manifestation, born in northeastern Brazil and that
is part of the practice of literary literacy, a process resulting from the act of teaching and
learning within social practices, a form of internalization of reading that reflects on writing. Given this context, this article aimed to verify how cordel literature, based on the works of Zezé Folheteiro, contributes to the alphabetization and literacy process. We sought to identify a real possibility for his works to express social and cultural values to alphabetization and literacy, their contribution to this knowledge and the appreciation of Literary Literacy. The bibliographical research approach was applied, through the conceptions of Freire (1978, 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2011), Soares (2001, 2010, 2012 and 2017),Cosson (2006 and 2014), Kleiman (1995), Solé (1998) and Tfouni (1995), who were crucial to substantiate about the process of alphabetization and literacy, and the relevance of literary literacy. The study also included documentary research and critical and reflective analysis of Zezé Folheteiro's works based on a case study. It was found that the works of Zezé Folheteiro are an example of the literacy process that the artist acquired through his experience and contact with the world, understanding that literacy is a tool that rescues sociocultural precepts, not disconnecting from the schooling, but that coincides with external values and knowledge.
